GATES MILLS, Ohio -- Cleanup continues after a gas well in Gates Mills failed allowing oil to leak into creeks and streams.

said residents along Gates Mills Boulevard reported a smell of fuel coming from the creek Saturday. Some residents collected water from the creek and there was oil floating on top.
Robinson says the leak was traced back to a gas well a mile away on Dorchester Road. The well owned by PEP Drilling had a valve failure that allowed approximately 1,000 gallons of crude oil to spill out. Robinson said the containment unit also failed and the oil leaked out into a creek.
Sunday, crews were able to contain the spill and keep it fromButterfly Valves
reaching the Chagrin River.
"Part of that was the booms that were put in place to stop it and Safety valves
also it was a finite amount of oil then there was no more, there wasn't a continuous flow," Robinson said.
The fire chief added that the dry weather helped to keep the Reducing Valves
spill from spreading further.
Monday, cleanup crews were using vacuum trucks and oil booms to contain and clean up the spill. Crews are also working at the well site to dig up the contaminated soil.
The Ohio EPA issued a notice of violation to the well owner, PEP API Cast Steel Valves
Drilling. EPA representatives say the environmental impact was minimal. They found no dead fish or wildlife as a result of the spill.
The oil did not reach any drinking supplies.
